Fire Sprinkler Pipe Freeze Protection
Chromalox’s Fire Sprinkler Pipe Freeze Protection System is designed to protect wet sprinkler piping from freezing and includes the following components:
- CPR Heating Cable
- ITC-FS Panel & RTBC-FS Controls
- RTD Temperature Sensors
- DL Series Connection Kits
- Attachment Accessories (including attachment tape, pipe straps, caution labels, etc.)
- Thermal Insulation & Sealed Exterior Cover (provided by others)
Use of Heat Trace in the Application:
Freeze protection of fire sprinkler systems is a critical application that must be designed and installed properly to ensure proper performance. Chromalox currently has one of the only UL/cUL listed systems globally which complies with the latest NFPA 13, IEEE 515.1, and UL 515A standards. The system is approved for use on sprinkler mains, standpipes, and branch lines. Chromalox’s Fire Sprinkler system will prevent fire sprinkler piping from freezing and shall ensure safe operation down to temperatures of -40°F.
- Please note that National Electric Code requires ground fault protection (GFEP) for all heat tracing.
Important Design Notes/Best Practices:
Calculate heat losses based on the following:
- Type and thickness of insulation
- Pipe material and diameter
- Set point for heat trace to maintain
- Expected worst case ambient temperature
Calculate number of circuits based on the following:
- Supply voltage
- Circuit breaker size
Confirm the following:
- Number of pipes being heat traced
- Number of branch lines and their footages
- If sprinkler heads are on fire-protection piping being heat traced
